Australia is not a stranger to battling bushfires; they do it every year. However, no one can remember a more destructive or deadly fire season than the one taking place now. Since September the fires have taken the lives of at least 20 people and as many as 480 million of Australia’s wild animals. Every state in the country has been hit, with the worst bushfires hitting New South Wales. 2,000 homes have been destroyed and almost 18 million acres of land, including national parks and forests, have been burned.

Around the world, people are watching in disbelief and overwhelming sadness as images and videos of the blazes circulate on the news. On social media celebrities are raising awareness and donating to multiple charities, prompting others to do the same. Everyone wants to offer their support and help in any small way they can. The United States and Canada have sent numbers of their own firefighters to assist with battling the blazes.

Australia’s summer months are hot and dry and with strong winds, many of the bushfires have lasted months. With recent rain there has been a bit of relief, however, large amounts of land are still burning and the fire season is not over.

If you’d like to help and are wondering how to find a charity to donate to, here is a list of organizations that are helping those affected by the fires.

Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund

The Australian Red Cross is accepting donations to help everyone affected by the bushfires. Any donation, no matter how small, can help to make a difference in the lives of the people who need help the most.

Kangaroo Island Mayor’s Relief Fund

Every year over 140,000 tourists visit Kangaroo Island. Local business owners rely very heavily on the tourism industry. Now, the fires have killed an estimated 20,000 koalas on the island. The mayor of this South Australian location has endorsed a relief fund to help receive aid funds so that the island can begin to recover.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

This organization provides people with a multitude of services. The society helps those in need find emergency housing, food, and clothing, among other things. Families who have been displaced by the fires can use every bit of help available so this is a great charity to consider donating to.

WIRES

WIRES is an organization that focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in Australia. The fires have killed a huge number of animals and it’s likely that the number of animals that have perished will rise significantly once the full recovery of the bushfires begins. The surviving animals need help. Not only are there food shortages, but an unprecedented amount of their habitats are being destroyed. WIRES is doing everything they can to help, however it’s going to be a long-term challenge.

The World Wildlife Fund

Similar to WIRES the WWF is working hard to save Australian wildlife and restore land so that there are future habitats for the animals.

Everyone in Australia is affected by the bushfires in one way or another. Every state and county has their  own individual relief funds to help the wildlife, the firefighters and their families, and everyone in the communities that are dealing with the disaster that is taking place. Even if it’s only a small amount, consider making a donation to help and let Australians know that there are people all over the world who care and want to help.
