He started his education at Kuban State Technological University. There he earned his master of science degree in architecture and planning. He continued his learning at Universitaet Dortmund where he received his post-graduate diploma in regional development planning and management. Manoj then earned his master of science degree at the Asian Institute of Technology at Universitaet Dortmund, choosing to specialize in regional development planning and management. His executive education was carried out at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he focused on leaders in development.
Manoj Basnyat currently holds the position of Special Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He has also served in the Office of the President of the United Nations General Assembly in the role of senior adviser and coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals Team (SDG). There, he was recognized for his exemplary leadership skills while pushing for the implementation of every one of the 17 sustainable development goals. He was especially proud of the execution of goals that dealt with ending poverty and hunger.
In addition to all of these achievements, he has held other notable positions within the UNDP. In the role of Special Adviser within the Bureau of Management, Manoj helped to establish a multitude of management and developmental deals. He also led the movement to establish a more efficient way of providing technical assistance and resources to underserved areas. He worked for extended periods as the resident representative in Ukraine and Afghanistan and as the country director in Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and he worked with global stakeholders to organize, manage, and deliver developmental assistance. His success in forming development alliances, finding innovative development solutions, mobilizing resources and increasing outreach to partners in the government, civil society and communities transformed UNDP’s assistance as the largest and most effective.
Manoj Basnyat has received numerous awards throughout his career, such as the David Lockwood Award by UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific for his dedication, professionalism, and results in Afghanistan. He lives in New York City and speaks three languages: English, Russian and Nepali.
